Hi, I’m Amelia Avilés, a San Francisco-based multi-media visual artist, performer & sex-positive activist. After years of exploring my artistry through traditional training in the theatre and visual arts, as well as time spent as an actor in Los Angeles, in 2008 I began to focus my work on sharing my artistic, personal and academic exploration of human sexuality and gender identity. Since beginning the coming out process myself in 2007, I’ve realized how important it is for me to help enlighten and empower people about sexual & gender diversity. One way I currently do this is through my burlesque persona Lexi Lipstick. Other current work includes my explorations of transgender narratives as well as postcolonial sexualities of the people of the Caribbean (which includes the resource site QueerCaribbean.com); I have primarily been working with these themes through locative media and oral historical methods.
At AmeliaAviles.com, you can view my visual and performance art as well as my artist’s blog. In the summer of 2010 I will be re-launching my commercial photography site as well as launching a new site dedicated to my erotic photography work, so please check back soon.
